Dell G5 Gaming Desktop 2022

The G5’s design is a bit of a mixed bag. It can lack creativity both out and inside, but it takes the points for being a tiny rig that can simply suit in the small spaces (we claim that this is somebody living in the smaller apartment with a huge PC).

The front is a series of gray lines with one line diagonally through the center which can light up blue when the machine is switched on. Dell’s logo is such a blue at the super bottom of the front of the best gaming desktop, and the G5 moniker is printed onto the stripe. If that one component might not light up, we can simply see that design used for the business PC.

From the unit’s right side, there is a plastic window to track with the PC. There is blue LED lighting as well. It certainly makes it seem like the gaming equipment, though there is not a ton to glance at. All the PCBs are bare, and the window is not centered above the side panel.

We are anxious about the airflow of the PC case. There is no more in the fans’ way. Particularly, there are double fans. There is one 80mm exhaust fan on the back and the other 80mm fan on what appears to be a stock cooler. In reality, it is pulling the air via the front, though you might not add the rest of the fan here due to the 3.5-inch HDD cage.

Upgradeability and ports

Maybe the interesting component of G5’s design is that it comes with a whole bunch of ports in the front. There are separate microphone jacks, headphones and a pair of USB 2.0 Type-A ports, and the USB 3.1 Type-C port.

The ports in the back of the motherboard are quite sparse. Next, you might simply take out the left-side panel by loosening double hand-screws. The front panel with the light even comes off, but you might not take it out of the back panel as well. There were double additional RAM slots on the unit so that you might stick with 64GB of RAM, but the slots are super close as well.

If you get RAM with coolers or RGB lights, they can touch. The G5 is equipped with 512GB of SSD. If you need to turn that out, it is easy since the board brings room with 2280 in a similar space. Other configurations run with HDDs. But since ours can’t, there are empty hard drive cages as well.

You might place double 2.5-inch HDDs on the top, and the 3.5-inch HDD on the front. Besides, the motherboard even comes with x1 and x4 slots for extras, though the latter is specifically beneath the GPU.

Beyond turning the processor (to something which operates with the H370 chipset), or the GPU, there is not much else you could do upgrade-wise. If you need to substitute the CPU fan, for example, you would perhaps get to take out the whole motherboard to set up the backplate.

Gaming experience

The Dell G5 we evaluated supported the GTX 1660 GPU. You can not experience each game on its high settings, but that GPU might get the job done as well. For instance, we played Control with high settings, and it hovered from 40 to 50 fps as Jesse fought off the Hiss’ hordes. The double little fans were particularly loud, though, for their attempt to cool the case.

As we can not see a lot of cheap pre-built passes through the labs, we can compare to the oldie like the Acer 50. That brought the Intel Core i7 and the GTX 1060 so that the G5 can show other improvements.

Next, with Hitman (full HD, and ultra setting), the G5 worked with around 94 fps and overcame the Nitro (73 fps). In addition to that, the Dell G5 took the Tomb Raider (full HD, very high setting) benchmark with 44 fps, defeating the Nitro’s 35 fps.

The GTA V (full HD, very high setting), the G5 can operate the game at 53 fps, ahead of the Nitro with 46 fps.

When it comes to the stress test of the Dell G5 gaming PC, we implemented Metro: Exodus 15 times with a loop on ultra max settings. It might work with the average fps like 39 fps. The highest was a little more than 39 fps on the initial run, and the lowest was specifically the next run, approximately 38.5 fps. It was quite consistent as well.

Productivity performance

The G5 is equipped with the i7-9700, and 512GB of SSD that makes it a sustainable productivity machine alongside gaming.

To make a comparison with it, we moved back to Geekbench 4.0. The Dell G5 reached a score of 26.6 on the test, particularly defeating the Nitro 50 (i7-8700). The file transfer test was a research of PCIe SSDs vs HDDs. The G5 copied around 5GB of files within 10 seconds, and the speed of 565.5 MBps. By comparison, the Nitro can crawl at 611 MBps.

As for the handbrake test where computers transcode 4K videos to full HD, it took the Dell G5 7 minutes and 55 seconds to finish the task, showing the generation speed.

Dell contains a keyboard and the mouse of the box, but they are certainly not gaming-grade. There is a plastic keyboard with flat keys and a cheap-feeling wired mouse with double click buttons, and a scroll wheel as well. If you need the right gaming keyboard or mouse; you will get to source one for yourself.

Warranty and software

There is a bit of additional software on the Dell G5. Some of it can be beneficial, but there is even some bloat. Next, the Alienware Command Center that equips Dell’s ultimate line of machines, brings both GPU and CPU usage and makes you run games from the unified library.

Dell mobile connects makes you manage the smartphone and send messages from the portable computer; though; the phone application built into Windows 10 is beginning to make that unnecessary.

However, Dell has even put McAfee security and Netflix as well. That is on the usual bloat’s top with Windows 10, such as Hotspot shield free VPN and Candy Crush. Besides, Dell can sell the G5 gaming PC with a one-year warranty. For an extra payment, you might purchase up to many years of premium assistance.

We assessed the configuration of the Dell G5 gaming PC with the specifications above and the chassis with the clear side panel. In reality, there are many small upgrades as well. For example, the default wireless choice is Qualcomm DW 1810 with Bluetooth 4.2 (that is what was in the review unit). With $25, you might get killer Bluetooth 5.0 as well.

In addition to that, the default is about a 360W power supply without the clear side panel. The upgrade to the 450W might put up to $20, whereas both the 460W PSU and the windows on the right one put around 50 bucks.

On top of it, the choices for storage, containing mixtures of HDDs and SSDs are plentiful as they are selections for CPUs.

Pros and Cons of Dell G5 gaming PC

  • It has a compact size
  • It brings many ports in the front
  • It is quite reasonable to purchase.
  • It has limited cooling ways
  • The Dell G5 gaming PC is an affordable entry-level rig, but its cooling way is limited, and you could do more upgrading.

Final thoughts

The Dell G5 gaming PC is a compact rig that might experience most games at a reasonable price. It has come simply with accessible ports, but the proprietary motherboard and the PSU meant for the server prove that components beyond the CPU, RAM, and GPU are not particularly upgradeable.

It is something you purchase to enjoy the PC games on out of the box, not to tinker with later. It does this job effectively for the price, and we get to hand it to Dell. Moreover, there are a lot of configuration choices for you to select. Finally, if you have any difficulties involved in choosing the Dell G5 gaming desktop, we will suggest that you need to leave your opinions below this article.

Hi, I have a Dell G5 gaming desktop
I’ve looked into getting a clear side access panel and internal led lighting. The clear side panel that Dell said that I needed won’t fit the chassis of my PC as the tabs on it are different to the tabs on my case side panel. They quoted for the internal led lighting too which might fit but I’m not sure as i think the clear side panel and internal led lighting are for a previous series of the G5 which shipped with it as standard.
I’ve thought about buying a spare side panel, cutting a space in it and gluing in a clear side panel of plexiglass.
As for the RGB led lighting for inside the case, I’ve thought of battery powered but that might be a nightmare as I’d have to open the case everytime the battery runs out. I’ve thought if there’s lighting that’ll plug into the motherboard but I don’t fancy doing that incase I break the board. Is there mains power led lighting that I could use perhaps? I’m open to the above options but I just need a bit of guidance on what are the best options and how to install it.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Glad I’ve found this group
